"We've Done It Again" and Secrets

You obviously have seen the above claims in advertisements many times throughout the years.  Every time I read these statements I can't help but think that the person selling the item must think I am stupid.    THERE ARE NO SECRETS!  (At least not in the quote High Performance Harley Street Market unquote)  AND what we have done is bring automotive technology, be it racing or OEM to the Harley world.  Ok, so everybody is pissed by now.  Let me explain.

"We've Done It Again"  Example, Beehive springs.  The reference was linked to NASCAR.  They have been used in you regular old car parked in your garage for years AND they have been around for almost 100 years.  The Wright Brothers plane was powered by a motor using Beehive Springs.  Comp Cams used them in there LS1 motor and you could use these spring in Harley heads as well.  WHAT YOU DID DO, was make a nice kit that was packaged well, setup and ready to go.  No machining, no hassles.  Great Job in bringing automotive technology to the v-twin market.

Secrets.   We would all like to believe that there are some secrets somewhere that will give us the edge.  The truth is you could probable just adjust your brake pads to eliminate drag, align your suspension,  change your wheel bearing to a low friction bearing with low friction grease, and run a light weight oil and you would see about the same gains as you would with many performance improvements.  I know, you are not going to believe that one either.  However, I am not talking about a full motor build here.

If we consider the all out assault on performance, there are still no secrets. Don't believe me.  Check out Daren Morgan, previously head of cylinder head development with Rehire Morrison, now with Pro-Filer, interview with National Dragster.  In a NATURALLY aspirated engine, all the horsepower is made in the heads.  The physics of air flow and fluid dynamics apply very well to cylinder head development. These principles have become very well know to the performance world and in particular, the Pro Stock NHRA Car class.  THERE IS SIMPLE NO OTHER CLASS IN RACING NATURALLY ASPERATED ENGINES MAKING MORE HOREPOWER PER CUBIC INCH.  A Rehire Morrison Prostock NHRA motor make 2.7 HP per CI.  These guys know how make power.

The Prostock cylinder head porter is the simple the best head guy on the plant, Period! The fact you are seeing the NHRA Prostock motorcycle guys stop doing their own head and starting to send them to the Prostock Car guys is a telling trend.  Daren Morgan did Angel Sampays head when she was tearing up the field before they let the Harleys move up in HP several years ago.  He also did heads for a number of the NASCAR and Top Fuel Heads teams, not to mention the usual prostock car head he did before leaving Rehire Morrison.  That's why I used him to help me finish the M3 head & Manifold.  Ever wonder what the M3 stood for?  Mathews, Mondello, Morgan   (My Idea & design, Mondello taught me to port heads, and Morgan helped me port the manifold and finishes the head to match)

So here we are, full circle. Hopefully someone WILL DO IT AGAIN. Here are  some thing to think about.  Direct Fuel injection. This currently being used in the automotive industry for cleaner emissions and possible some performance advantages,  Powder Metal Connecting Rods offer superior strength with significant weight reductions,  Belt Driven Camshaft, Bob Wood has already done it and S&S Wedge Motor uses a belt to drive the cams.   Hardly new idea, cars have used belts for years, why not Harley?  It would improve the accuracy of cam timing without having to used gears,  High Performance ignition module for the fuel injected bikes?  Come on MSD.  I know you guys can do it. And last, how about THE MOTOR COMPANY stepping up and making a bike that I don't have to drop $3000 into to make run the way it should from the factory? Finally, there are no secrets.  The knowledge is out there and is based on sound principles that can be measured, duplicated, and verified.  The rules apply to Harleys and work for most all v-twins. While there are some differences, they are what give the American V-Twin its soul.      "Standing in the middle of the road is dangerous.  You will get knocked down by traffic from both ways."  jkm  MPP
